If you then screw the large nut back on the pin it holds the scope mount in place in the top of the carrying handle for the rifle which you can now fix standard low profile scopes or red dot sights. There are a very few scope designs designed to be mounted directly on the carry handle, but this mount means any scope can be used. With more modern AR rifles the entire carry handle can be taken off leaving a large flat rail that scopes can be fitted but you need risers to raise them up to eye level to see over the front iron sights.
