I use a lot of the ESP8266-01 models. This "12" model is even smaller and has much more functionality. I do use the adapter though to be able to place it on a breadboard (Serial Port WIFI ESP8266 Module Adapter Plate With IO Lead Out For ESP-07 ESP-08 ESP-12 with product id 1056677). For programming this ESP I use exactly the same programmer as for the ESP8266-0; also the pins used for programming are the same (not so strange as it is the same chip). Using the Arduino IDE; do select the NodeMCU 0.9 (ESP-12 Module). Note; for using this device with the Arduino IDE, check the internet searching for "esp8266 arduino ide".
