The module pins were bent during shipment but I could mend it. First you need to update the firmware : look at those links for tutorial : -http://bbs.nodemcu.com/t/nodemcu-firmware-download-build-20150318-new-location/27 - http://www.electrodragon.com/w/ESP8266_NodeMCU_Dev_Board - http://bbs.nodemcu.com/t/nodemcu-firmware-download-build-20150318-new-location/27 - https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-flasher Easy to have it work. Enjoy !

to flash new firmware: 0) on windows/mac - download drivers (google it). No drives required on Linux (but use sudo) 1) download firmware https://github.com/nodemcu/nodemcu-firmware/tree/master/pre_build/latest 2) download esptool.py https://github.com/themadinventor/esptool 3) hold the 'flash' button on the board and run ./esptool.py --port=/dev/ttyUSB0 write_flash 0x00000 nodemcu_latest.bin 4) you can use ESPlorer to comunicate with it https://github.com/4refr0nt/ESPlorer

While the base ESP8266 module is pretty slick as-is with the standard firmware, you can extend the usefulness of the built-in ARM processor using the open source work done by NodeMCU. This module is the 0.9 version of NodeMCU.com's dev kit for the ESP8266. It incorporates a standard ESP8266-12 module along with a CH340G USB<->Serial converter. The NodeMCU firmware is flashed to the memory in the 8266 using the nodemcu-flasher tool and you have an instant command line LUA language programming tool. This can be used to extend the 8266 supporting SPI, I2C and Arduino like digital and analog I/O using the GPIO pins of the 8266. Once the firmware has been loaded, you can upload and execute LUA scripts with the LuaLoader tool that is downloaded from Github. For all the tools and files, visit NodeMCU.com and click on the "English" link in the upper right hand corner, otherwise, you'll need to know Chinese.

While the board works flawless the problem is that it's not bradboard friendly as it's just as large as the breadboard so you don't have any room for jumpers. You have to look for the narrow - black one or get a cheaper ESP-201. Well it's pretty and it works, but it's not the final board.

Easy to use by Arduino IDE. Use https://github.com/esp8266/Arduino and you are up and running in a matter of minutes. Use two mini breadboard for easy access.

Works perfectly with EspEasy and Domoticz https://www.letscontrolit.com/wiki/index.php/ESPEasy, upload firmware, connect to your wifi, and after rebooting it, it is really simple to use it for switching 8 relays It just takes an HTTP call like: http://192.168.100.54/control?cmd=GPIO,,<1/0 On/off>

Pretty nice device. Good design, perfect soldering, good layout. It's like a toy, nice to hold it in a hand. Comparely with Wemos modules, this one is more accurate. Module's datasheet, schematic are available in the net. This is useful in development. Personally I did not use lua with this device, I prefer Arduino IDE, works good.

I'm using it to log temperatures at a remote site and so far it is performing very well indeed. It has an exceptionally small current draw which means that even with the winter daylight a small solar cell is more than adequate to keep the battery charged.
